Director Myung Joo Kim aims to successfully lead the Korea AI Safety Institute by leveraging over 30 years of expertise and leadership in the fields of security and digital ethics. Through global collaboration with AI safety institutes worldwide, he is dedicated to contributing to the establishment of a national governance framework.
Director Kim is a security expert with a background in computer science and has been an advocate for digital ethics for many years. Since 2019, he has led the Right AI with Security & Ethics Research Center (RAISE). In 2012, he contributed to the establishment of the Korea Society of Internet Ethics and later served as its president.
Since 2016, he has been involved in various roles, such as an Ethics Committee Member of the Intelligent Information Society, the Chair of the AI Ethics Policy Forum, and the Head of the Digital Competency Enhancement Division at the Digital Inclusion Forum (National Information Society Agency). He notably elevated public understanding of AI ethics by introducing the "Seoul PACT" (Publicness, Accountability, Controllability, and Transparency), Korea’s first AI ethics declaration. Recently, as a government-appointed AI expert for the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) under the OECD, he has also made significant contributions to the legislation of the AI Basic Act in various capacities.
Currently, Director Kim holds several prominent positions, including serving as the President of the International Association of Artificial Intelligence and Ethics (IAAE), Vice-Chair of the Korea Copyright Commission, and Head of the Digital Dysfunction Division at the Digital Inclusion Forum.
Director Kim graduated from Seoul National University with a bachelor's degree in computer science and obtained both a master's and a doctoral degree in computer science from the same university.
